Well since it needed attention now, it seemed like a good time to put this into practice. Every other clutch (frictions and such) measured up just fine.Īt some point in the near future I had intended to freshen up this transmission and strengthen it for a supercharger I would like to add. The 3-4 clutch was half way through it’s useful life, with just beginning signs of hot spots on the steels. Actually if it wasn’t for the moronic shift kit killing it, it would have lasted a great deal longer. Once Candi and I had removed the transmission and moved it to a suitable work place as it is quite heavy, I was able to pull it apart and look it over. What a mess! I seriously dislike getting oily. I mean seriously how much extra can that cost…. Other than, and this is my personal shouting with GM, not putting a drain plug in the pan of the transmission. Fortunately I was able to remove the factory “C” clips from the bearing caps and with a pry bar push just enough to slide the bearing caps out of the companion flange and then rotate propellor shaft to clear the rear axle flange. I really cringed at the thought of removing some of the trailing arms off the rear axle to clear the Cardon joint from the companion flange. This preloaded the propeller shaft something fierce. When the shaft sheared it sheared on an angle and not perpendicular to the length. I walked back, packed a tow rope, and with my wonderful partner Candi and my trusty 17 year old Grand Marquis towed my Impala back home.

Fortunately the shaft sheared 2 miles from home. It also did a lot of collateral damage to the back half of the mechanical parts of the transmission. Well one month ago, it hit hard for the last time because it sheared the output shaft in two big pieces and a lot of little ones. Just these little improvements made some decent power gains. One last bit was to buy Jet's Dynamic Spectrum Tuner to reflash the PCM with different fan turn on temperatures and advance the timing a tad. As far as the engine, I installed roller rockers and replaced the badly worn timing chain and sprockets (100K miles), bypassed the coolant on the throttle body, installed a 160 deg F thermostat and rebuilt the Opti-Spark along with new spark plugs.

New front steering components, (ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, center link and a new idler arm), plus new balanced tires. Now a brief summery of the things I added or completed. Asįar as other modifications, it came with different (louder mufflers), a crossover Actually it was quite annoying and I always meant to “undo” it. The person who owned it before me put a “shift kit” in it. I bought my ’96 DGM about 3 years ago and probably put 10K miles on it since. After all, if I can rebuild one of these and it works wonderfully, so can you I hope you find this helpful and encouraging. general notes of comments and frustrations along with pictures of the more in depth changes. a listing, price, and source of the partsĤ. I'd be happy to answer anyones specific or general questions, if I can either post or email me. My listing here isn't meant as a comprehensive rebuild instruction, but really to show what's involved if no one has done this before as well as a few tricks I've picked up along the way and perhaps inspire you to try rebuilding yours, if it should need it, for freshening it up or making it stronger for additional power adders you might have in mind. I do believe in researching and having the proper measurement tools to check the critical clearances. I am not an expert, but this is the 4th transmission I've rebuilt with great success, the three previous were one TH400 and two 700R4's. "Transmission shift kits, headaches and rebuilding your own 4L60E"Īpparently the transmissions are a weak point in our Impala’s and I'd like to share my experiences of rebuilding my own 1996 4L60E.
